Kigali, Rwanda – September 2025
The Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE) hosted a landmark alumni convening in Kigali, Rwanda, bringing together representatives from 23 chapters across West, East, Central, and Southern Africa. Held under the theme “From Learner to Leader – FAWE Alumni Leading the Way,” the three-day event celebrated the evolution of FAWE alumni into influential leaders driving change in education, advocacy, and community development across the continent.
Ms. Yamah A. Sumoku, FAWE Alumni Network Representative – Liberia, represented FAWE Liberia at the convening, contributing to strategic discussions and collaborative planning sessions aimed at strengthening alumni engagement and impact.
Day One: Empowering Through Collaboration and Capacity Building
The convening opened with remarks from Ms. Teresa Omondi, Deputy Executive Director of FAWE Africa and FAWE Rwanda Council President; Alumni Chair Ms. Wendy T. Muzite; and Hon. Claudette Irere, who described the event as a “homecoming” and called on alumni to uphold FAWE’s legacy of impact.
Engineer Joy Makumbe delivered a stirring keynote address, urging participants to “never dim your light; be the torchbearer.” The day featured interactive workshops focused on strategic communication, digital tools, resource mobilization, emotional intelligence, and youth-led advocacy.
Day Two: Strategic Planning and Opportunity Mapping
The second day centered on regional collaboration, with alumni developing sample action plans for network governance. The FAWE/Mastercard Foundation Phase II Program was highlighted, presenting new avenues for alumni engagement, including graduate school scholarships, effective communication strategies, and preparations for the 2026 FAWE Girls’ Conference.
Day Three: Sustaining Impact and Strengthening Accountability
The final day emphasized long-term sustainability, exploring funding models, convening frequency, and accountability mechanisms. A Commitment Board was signed by alumni, affirming their continued dedication to FAWE’s mission.
Closing remarks were delivered by Madam Alice (FAWE Rwanda NC), Ms. Teresa Omondi, and the Rwandan Minister of Gender and Family Promotion, who reinforced the critical role of alumni in shaping Africa’s educational future.
Engaging the Next Generation: Visit to FAWE School for Girls
A highlight of the convening was a visit to the FAWE School for Girls, where over 600 students welcomed alumni with enthusiasm. During interactive sessions, alumni led discussions on effective study habits, goal setting, mental health awareness, and overcoming challenges fostering meaningful intergenerational connections and inspiring hope for the future.
